Prayer, in its simplest form, is communication with God. It is not an abstract ritual but an act of speaking to our Creator. While God has spoken to humanity unchangingly in His word, prayer is humanity’s side of that ongoing dialogue. Prayer is the means by which believers express their thoughts, adoration, confessions, and requests to God.

Some theological views can present prayer as a mystical force or a “thing” possessing inherent power. The biblical model, however, presents prayer as an action. The power does not exist in the act of praying; the power rests entirely in God who hears the prayer. Prayer is the appeal, but God is the one who acts in response, according to His own perfect will and wisdom.

This understanding also reframes the concept of “answered prayer.” An answered prayer is not necessarily one that receives a “yes” to a specific request. An answered prayer is any prayer that receives a response from God, even if that response is “no”. The goal of prayer is not to bend God’s will to our own (not that this is possible), but to align our will with His and to deepen our reliance upon Him, trusting that His response, whatever it may be, is good.
