The foundational assumption of science is that the universe is understandable. We expect that through observation and reason, we can define and give intelligible mathematical values to laws governing everything from subatomic particles to galactic clusters. This concept, known as the rational intelligibility of the universe, is and must be taken for granted. Without observable, repeatable, and predictable events, science cannot be done. However, philosophers like C.S. Lewis, and mathematician John Lennox, have argued that this very intelligibility poses a serious question to be considered. They contend that the fact the cosmos is intelligible and that our minds can comprehend that order serves as a powerful apologetic for the existence of a rational Creator.
Scientific observation must presuppose this intelligibility for this work to be possible. It is a fundamental, pragmatic article of faith. Regarding this point, Albert Einstein noted, “the eternal mystery of the world is its comprehensibility.” This issue is twofold. First, why should the cosmos operate according to consistent, mathematical laws at all? It could have been pure, unintelligible chaos. This kind of universe could not sustain any life to observe it, but this chaotic state is the most likely from a materialist viewpoint. Second, why should our human minds, which emerged on a small planet, possess the unique ability to grasp those universal laws? Why is the logic embedded in the cosmos accessible to us?
John Lennox, argued that this is not a coincidence but is a key piece of evidence of transcendent Designer and Creator. For the naturalist, the internal reasoning of the mind and the external intelligibility of the universe have entirely separate origins. There is no reason within this framework to expect these two different systems to be congruent. Yet, they are. The abstract mathematics originating inside the human mind precisely describes the external behaviour of the universe. Beyond this, the most abstract thing about this mathematics is that it is intrinsically logical apart from both mind and matter. These mathematical constants would be true of the universe even if there was no mind to interpret them, but mathematics can be done and remains true even in the abstract without any application to the physical world. In its simplest form this can be understood that 2+2=4, even if this equation is not applied to any physical matter. A formula regarding physical constants could be mathematically correct in that the formula is valid, even if it does not most accurately reflect the material constant that it is trying to observe.
Lennox contends this congruence of intelligibility and comprehension points to a common, rational source, understood as the Logos or ultimate Reason in the person of God. The theistic explanation is that the universe is intelligible because a rational Creator designed it. Our minds, in turn, can understand that logic because that same Creator made us in His image (Gen 1:27), imparting to us a rationality that dimly reflects His. The intelligibility of the universe and the intelligence of the mind are not two separate improbabilities but point to the mind of God.
Significant challenges arise when we consider the origin of perception itself. An unguided process must explain why and how an organism would even develop the first light-receiving cells when its constituent parts are unaware that light even exists. The same problem applies to sound. These systems require a pre-existing target for selection to occur, a target that a blind, unguided process itself cannot see. If it is difficult to account for the evolution of processes and parts that can perceive the physical world around it, how much more difficult is it to account for a mind that can comprehend abstract principles? Mathematics is not physical stimuli. It cannot be seen or heard.
Lennox often cites Physicist Eugene Wigner who famously described the “unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics.” Mathematicians often invent abstract principles for purely aesthetic reasons. I do not mean abstract as if to say that they are not real. But they are abstract in that they are principles that are internally logical and consistent even if they are not applied to or derived from real life. For a number of these ideas, sometimes decades or centuries later, physicists discover those same principles are the exact language needed to describe a newly observed phenomenon of our material world. Non-Euclidean geometry, for example, was a mathematical idea long before Einstein required it to formulate General Relativity.
Such a precise relationship between abstract thought and physical reality is difficult to explain as a mere coincidence of mindless unguided processes. If the mind is simply an accidental by-product of a mindless universe, by what means would its most abstract and non-survival-oriented thoughts be perceived by beings who are themselves a result of this mindless unguided process? This is to say nothing about the ability to then develop human language through which these abstractions can be expressed in a reciprocally understandable way.
C.S. Lewis explored a related problem. While Lennox focuses on the congruence between the mind and the universe, Lewis focused on the validity of the mind itself. He argued that if the mind is merely an accidental by-product of nature, we lose all grounds for trusting its conclusions. His argument, often called the “Argument from Reason,” challenges the worldview of strict naturalism which is the belief that everything, including our thoughts, is the product of mindless, unguided physical processes. If naturalism is true, Lewis argued, then we have no reason to believe naturalism itself is true.
Lewis distinguishes between two kinds of “because.” We can say a thought exists because of a physical cause (the neurons fired) or because of a logical basis (it follows from evidence). If naturalism is true, every thought is ultimately explainable only by the first kind of “because.” If my mind is simply the product of a long chain of non-rational events explained by physics and chemistry, operating without purpose, why should I trust its conclusions? If a belief in my mind is just the firing of neurons, determined by genetic history and the day’s chemical inputs, it is not a rational belief. It is merely a chemical event. We have no grounds to say it is “true” or “false,” only that it happened. A thought that is generated on the basis of this framework has no necessary connection to metaphysical truth, any more than a stomach-ache has a connection to truth. It is just a physical state.
Lewis argued that trusting a mind produced by unguided processes is like trusting the sound of wind blowing through trees to produce a coherent philosophical argument. We would dismiss the “thoughts” of the wind as noise because the sound is not about anything. It has no intention, no meaning and no basis to assert truth. It is purely the result of physical cause and effect. Lewis contends that if naturalism is true, all our thoughts are just like the wind. They are the non-rational result of prior physical states. They are caused by nothing more than brain chemistry, not grounded in logic.
This creates a self-defeating paradox for the naturalist. The naturalist uses their reason, which is their faculty for logic and inference, to arrive at the conclusion that naturalism is true. But that very conclusion necessitates that this reason is not a reliable faculty for finding truth. It is just a series of chemical events. As Lewis points out, this is to cut off the branch you are sitting on. If the naturalist’s conclusion is true, then the thought “naturalism is true” is just a neurological event, not a rational insight. It therefore has no foundation upon which it can claim to be true.
The theistic worldview offers a different foundation. It posits reason not as a late-stage accident of matter, but as the source of reality. “In the beginning was the Word (logos)” (Jn 1:1). In this view, our minds are capable of reason because they are derived from the ultimate Reason, which is God Himself. Our thoughts are not only chemical events; they can connect with truth.
The scientific method, from this perspective, finds its ultimate justification. It is not an act of imposing a human-invented order onto a meaningless or chaotic universe. Rather, science becomes a great act of discovery, or as some have said, “thinking God’s thoughts after Him.” The scientist, in this view, is uncovering the pre-existing order, logic, and mathematical conformity woven into the fabric of reality by a divine mind. Rather than undermining it, this view provides a foundation for the scientific method, trusting that the universe is orderly because it was ordered. The fact that the cosmos is intelligible, and that we possess minds capable of comprehending that intelligibility, ceases to be a coincidence. It is perhaps the most significant clue we have about the nature of reality: that the universe is not a cosmic accident, but a coherent thought from a mind to a mind.
This historical and philosophical connection is what Lennox often highlights. The pioneers of modern science like Newton, Kepler, and Galileo undertook their work precisely because they held this worldview. They became scientific because they expected to find law in nature. They expected law in nature because they believed in a rational Lawgiver. For them, the intelligibility of the universe was not a surprise, it was a direct consequence of their belief in a God who is both rational and faithful, the same God who created the human mind to discover that order.
